Outside of the centre and away from the mainstream attractions you’ll find a very different Copenhagen: across the water to the East lies the self-declared Free State of Christiania, and just south of the central train station the uber-hip district of Vesterbro.
This 2.5-hour tour is a story of two distinct neighbourhoods, one known for its green-light district, the other for its red-light district, each with a fascinating history bound together by their vibrant diversity and uncompromising counter-culture.
Despite international fame, both places retain an edgy sense of freedom, creativity, and grittiness you won’t find in the downtown core. On this tour, we’ll take you through Vesterbro, once the historic working-class district, and now an eclectic mix of young artists and entrepreneurs, sex workers and drug addicts.
From there, we’ll make our way down to Christiana. As tour groups aren’t permitted in the Free State, we’ll give you a detailed overview of what makes this area significant, before leaving you to explore it for yourself at the end of the tour.
This tour is an amazing tale of Copenhagen’s underground scene, and the people who make it incredible. This is more than just a story of hipsters and down-and-outs; this is a tale of a totally different world questioning the social, political and cultural status quo.
